What the F**K is Social Media?

I came across the What the F**K is Social Media presentation by Marta Kagan on Slideshare today and was really impressed with how well it tells the story of social media. It's simple, yet compelling.

Some of the content in the slideshow that stood out to me the most:

"Social media is people having conversations online"
OMG, it IS really that simple. Next time someone says "what is social media" you say "it is people talking     to eachother online"

"Social networking sites are officially more popular than porn sites"
Gasp! Perv's are now just checking out pictures that their hot friends were tagged in on their Facebook profile.

"In 2008, if you're not on a social networking site, your not on the internet"
This is oh so very true. It is hard to be online and refuse to connect with others. Even my mom found it necessary to create a facebook profile just so she could look at mine.

"By 2010, Millenials/Gen Y-ers will outnumber baby boomers"
"They already wield $350 Billion/yr in direct spending power"

That is a lot of money. We Millenials sure know how to work, earn a salary and spend like no other.

Very good. I now officially know how to describe social media to that clueless person who has no idea what it is.

Thanks for passing this presentation along. Some important social media reminders combined with stats I had not seen.

Thanks, Julia, for sharing the deck. The numbers totally blew me away when I first put them together back in July. Im sure theyll be even more compelling (if thats possible) when the next wave of data becomes available on adoption/usage etc.

And if Obamas landslide victory (fueled in part by social media) is any indication of the power and potential... well, it should be to see how you Digital Natives change the world. ;)

Interesting slide#68 Dont F**K With People. Exactly what Edelman did with the WalMart blog and as of today the whole Palin flap regarding Africa. Seriously, dont eff with people folks it will bite you in the azz.

I like it. Not that I'm a big-shot social media person... but I have my feet sunk the deepest in my real-life social circle. This is a good tool is helping explain why I choose to spend the time I do... in social media. Thanks for the link.
