This is great, w00t is finally getting the recognition it deserves for being the coolest word this year. So what is this Word of the Year business all about?
I had no idea Merriam-Webster runs a contest each year where people can vote on the word they think deserves to be honored as the word of the year. Pretty cool. I mean, the word doesn't get included in the print edition of the dictionary and is only included in the online Open Dictionary, but seriously, who uses an actual dictionary to search for words anyways. It is so much easier to search for the definition of words online .
Wow, it has been a really long time since I have opened a dictionary or even a encyclopedia for that matter. It seems as soon as you buy it's outdated. Plus, why buy when you can get information for free online?
Sidenote I had a good laugh when I read this on the site:
This year's winning word first became popular in competitive online gaming forums as part of what is known as l33t ("leet," or "elite") speak—an esoteric computer hacker language in which numbers and symbols are put together to look like letters.
